DRAWING
Drawing is the act of marking a surface. We use drawing as a method of visual communication. It is the foundation of all 2D Art forms. We will learn observational drawing, which is drawing what our eyes see. Observational drawing can seem intimidating, but it is a skill that can be learned through practice.
1. How do artists draw from life?

When an artist draws from observation, they make decisions to determine the placement of each mark:
-
Before an artist begins drawing, they break down the subject into simple shapes.
The artist then observes each shape’s size, angle, and location.
-
The artist starts the drawing with light marks.
They place the biggest shape first, then work down to the smallest shapes.
No details or dark marks are made yet.
- After all basic shapes are placed, the artist creates increasingly complex forms layered over each other using darker marks.
- Finally, the artist creates a sense of light and shadow by shading values.
